If you have not already done so, download the Windows distribution containing the executable for the desired version of MODFLOW:
MODFLOW-2000 Executable version 1_18.01
MODFLOW-2005 Executable version 1.5
Note: If you are using Internet Explorer as your Internet browser, right click on the file that you are downloading. Choose Save Target As ... to download the file.
This download package is in .zip file format. If you are running Windows XP or a later version of the Microsoft Windows operating system, simply right click on the zip file containing the release and select the Extract All option; the pop-up dialog box will give further instructions for completing the installation. Note: it may behoove the user to modify the directory structure for the extraction; the default directory structure is given in the upper box of the Extract All menu. By default, the Extract All utility places the extracted files in a new folder with the same name as the zipped file; this extraction does not require this additional folder. Eliminating this name from the directory structure in the dialog box will prevent its creation. If you are running versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system earlier than Windows XP, you must have an unzip program such as Winzip to unzip the file. From the point of extraction, the top-most directory will be mf2000 or mf2005, depending on the selected release. This directory will contain either the executable mf2000.exe or mf2005.exe and two additional subdirectories: test and doc. The documentation for PCGN is contained in the doc directory, and a test data set is contained in test.
To test the installation, in the command-line interface window find the directory in which the release was installed. Then change directories to mf200x\test. Start the executable in this directory using ..\mf200x.exe on the command line. When MODFLOW asks for the name of a NAME FILE, insert twri.nam on the command line and press the return key. The listing file will be generated in the mf200x\test directory. Compare the listing file generated (twri.lst) with the test listing file twripcgn.lst to ascertain that the solver is working correctly.
