Dissolution By Model Ligands
- There was no dissolution of cinnabar by chloride, bromide or sulfate (at 0.01 M concentration, pH = 6.0).
- There was a small release of Hg from cinnabar by 10-3 M sulfide.
- Among the organic ligands, acetic acid, salicylic acid or EDTA did not release measurable quantities of Hg from cinnabar.
- Cysteine (a thiol compound) released small quantities of Hg into solution, while mercaptoacetic acid released significant quantities of Hg from cinnabar (Hg-mercpatoacetate stability constant = 1044).
- Dissolved organic matter, particularly the humic fractions, dissolved significantly more Hg from cinnabar than the model compounds studied.
