Effect of Polyvalent Cations
Polyvalent cations (e.g., Ca2+) present in natural waters interact with the DOM and are also capable of reacting with mineral surfaces. We tested the effect of polyvalent cations on the dissolution of cinnabar:
- Cinnabar dissolution was inhibited in the presence of small concentrations (2.5 x 10-4 M) of Ca2+ (with F1-HPoA).
- Natural water samples from F1 or 2BS sites did not dissolve cinnabar.
- When the polyvalent cations were removed, these same water samples dissolved significant quantities of Hg from cinnabar.
