Effect of Different Fractions of Organic Matter
- There was no measurable (<2.5 nM) dissolution of Hg from cinnabar in distilled
water (no organic matter, pH = 6.0).
- In the presence of organic matter, the dissolved Hg concentrations ranged from
below detection limit to about 1.7 µM/mg C.
- The amount of Hg dissolved by Suwannee River humic and fulvic acids was comparable
to F1 and U3 hydrophobic acids from the Everglades.
- Humic acid fractions dissolved more mercury than the corresponding fulvic acids.
- The amount of Hg dissolved by hydrophilic acids was much less than by the
hydrophobic acids.
- The hydrophobic and hydrophilic neutral fractions of organic matter dissolved
the least amount of Hg from cinnabar.
